About Graham and Claire
Graham Meadows is a former Auckland Zoo curator and veterinarian. An established international author and professional photographer, he also runs a commercial internet photo library service.
Claire Vial is a zoologist, photographer and African safari tour leader. She lived and worked in Africa as a conservation volunteer, and now runs her own African safari travel business.
WORKSHOP 1 – Knowing your digital camera and getting the right exposure
Outline: | Introductions – Graham Meadows and Claire Vial How digital cameras work – a presentation by Graham Meadows. Light and photons; the sensor; colour and white balance; your computer monitor, colour work space and sRGB; file compression and image file formats (JPG, TIFF, RAW etc); ISO and noise; the crop factor; optical vs digital zoom. Exposure – a presentation by Claire Vial. Shutter speed; aperture; depth-of-field; the ISO setting; using flash Know your camera modes – participants' questions about their camera settings are answered Photography around the Zoo – three hours in which to put theory into practice and have lunch Participants assess and download their images for group assessment Click here to view the full outline of this workshop |

WORKSHOP 2 – Picture Composition
Outline: | Introductions – Graham Meadows and Claire Vial Photographic Composition – a presentation by Graham Meadows. WORKSHOP 3 – An Introduction to Photoshop
Outline: | Introductions - Graham Meadows and Claire Vial Introducing Photoshop - a presentation by Graham Meadows The Basics - Pixels. Resolutions – camera, monitor, printer and image. Image formats. Working space. The menu, options and commands. Bring images into Photoshop. Processing a digital image - Tonality. The tool box. Image size. Sharpening the image. Saving your images. Printing an image. Photography around the Zoo - two hours in which to take photographs for processing and have lunch.
