Zoo news – Snorkel settling into new home

One of our female hippos, Snorkel, was moved from her current enclosure last month to a new home with the baboons.

Both Snorkel and the baboons are getting used to each other, but Snorkel can be seen enjoying her new area, which includes a mud wallow, a moat and a flat, grassed area for her. Now that Snorkel is over 50 years old, she is less mobile than she used to be, so this area is ideal for her.

Her old enclosure is in an area that will be part of our New Zealand precinct, Te Wao Nui, which is due to open in September 2011. Construction on this area is due to begin later this year.

Zoo news – New Zoo mum

You may have noticed that one of our zebra in Pridelands, Itika, is getting very big. She now weighs approximately 300kg as she is now eating for two. She is due to give birth very soon, so keep an eye out on our website for more updates when the foal arrives.

Zoo Alive is the official newsletter of Friends of Auckland Zoo. Click here to download the latest issue of Zoo Alive and to enter the competitions.

What's On at the Zoo – Get involved and love it!

Get your hands dirty in celebration of Conservation Week at the Zoo's Discovery Days on Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 September.

Here you will be able to plant a seedling and learn some simple things that you and the kids can do at home to see more of New Zealand's unique species, including making your own invertebrate monitors and weta hotels.

What's On at the Zoo – Comedy for Conservation

For two nights only – Wednesday, 22 and Friday, 24 September – you can catch a stellar comedic line-up with the likes of Jeremy Corbett, Ben Hurley and Jeremy Elwood, performing specially for conservation at the Old Elephant House.

Tickets start from $30* and are available from Ticketek. All funds raised will go toward the Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, to help with its kokako conservation work.

*To maximise the amount of money going towards conservation, we cannot offer a FOTZ discount for this event

What's On at the Zoo – September school holidays – Your passport to Asia

Come along to the Zoo these school holidays (Monday, 27 September to Sunday, 10 October) to discover more about some of our animals from Asia – the Sumatran tiger, red panda and the Asian elephant.

There will also be special encounters with these animals, activities and interactive shows.

What's On at the Zoo – Celebrating red pandas

At the end of this month, one of our red pandas – Khosuva – is moving to Darjeeling Zoo in India as part of a breeding programme.

There, Khosuva will be paired up with a mate and their offspring will be released into a national park in northern India, near the borders of Nepal and China.

To learn more about these amazing animals and how we are helping them in the wild, come along to our Red Panda Day on Saturday, 25 September from 10am to 2pm. There will be activities, special Red panda encounters and a chance for you to be chosen to go on an impromptu behind-the-scenes encounter.

RAW Style

Primate team leader Amy Dixon and her partner NZ Fauna keeper Dave Robbins are big fans of the RAW tee-shirts, which retail for $45. Like the kiwi envelope bag ($35), $5 goes directly to supporting projects in the wild. This kiwi envelope bag ($35), $5 goes directly to supporting projects in the wildRAW dispay in Wild Zone Gift Shop

Wild Zone Gift Shop stocks a spectacular range of RAW bags and satchels (made from Auckland Zoo billboards) and funky organic cotton t-shirts from Auckland Zoo's RAW (Reaching Animals Worldwide) brand.

Big on attitude and making a difference, a percentage from all products sold go direct to supporting conservation projects in the wild.

Made in New Zealand, RAW products make great gifts for both your Kiwi and overseas family and friends. And what's not to like about supporting Kiwi-made, and wearing products that'll have you looking great, protecting animals and saving the world!
