Conservation and Auckland Zoo
Conservation is at the heart of Auckland Zoo. Ask any staff member, and they will tell you that what drives them is their passion for conservation - the ability to make a difference to wildlife and the environment, and to inspire others to do the same. All the amazing animals you see at the Zoo have a conservation role. Many species allow us to highlight the threats they face in the wild, as well as directly support work to help save them. The Auckland Zoo Conservation Fund provides financial support to 12 key ongoing projects, currently distributing about $200,000 per year. Projects are a balance between New Zealand and overseas. Among them are local restoration project 'Ark in the Park' in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges and the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), for which we support two specific projects. These include wildlife protection units in Bukit Tigapulah National Park (BT) - which also help protect over 140 elephants, tigers, rhinos and many other species, and Sungai Pengian - a rehabilitation and release site in BT from which orangutans are released into a buffer zone that borders BT. The other nine species-specific projects we support help the Sumatran tiger, Asian rhino, Africa's cheetah, Asian turtles, Nepalese red panda, and in New Zealand - kea, New Zealand sea lion, birds of prey, and Maui's dolphin. Support for these projects is not always financial. We recently provided vital pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme's (SOCP) vet team at its release station, and also hosted a SOCP vet here at the Zoo to help her gain important work experience. In addition, two of our keepers recently spent a month helping on this project in Sumatra. Our Conservation Fund is supported by donations, events and also when you simply purchase a ticket to visit the Zoo. Without your support, none of this work would be possible - so thank you!
